In December 1979, the Anambra State Government of Nigeria issued a circular letter, REF. IN(S) 122/V/79 on the building of new schools. Based on this, the N.C.D.U, through it's chairman and secretary (late Dr. Prof. F.N Udeh and late Mazi U.C Umenukor) made a formal application to the then Aguata Local Government for the building of a secondary school at Ndiowu The first two blocks was build for the class rooms through a communal effort of the people of Ndiowu, when the Ministry of Education provided the community with the offically approved plans for secondary schools in rural areas after series of inspections. Unfortunately, because of certain political conficts in the communty at that time, the school was no longer opened. Rather, in it's place, a rival co-educational secondary school was opened at another end of Ndiowu. This disappointment hit the community hard. The community sought alternative uses for those buildings. Finally, it was decided the then Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, late Rt. Rev. Dr. A.K Obiefuna, be approached to consider using the premises as Girls' Secondary School. He accepted so, the school was handed over to then Catholic Bishop officially. His Lordship gave the school over to the congregation of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy, to OWN, MANAGE AND DEVELOP. Thus, it become Mercy Commercial School, Ndiowu in 1989. After another inspection by the Anambra State Ministry of Education in 1996, what used to be "Mercy Commercial School" changed it's status to a full fledged secondary school with the new name: DAUGHTERS OF MARY MOTHER OF MERCY GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL, NDIOWU. The school has both boarders and day students, but the day students must be students from Ndiowu only and they must become boarders in their SSS 3. The compound is fenced around with gate at the entrance
